Mentoring

Successful Mentoring Approach for Reaching Title 1 Schools

An approach to successful mentoring, designed especially for Title I schools, in the School District of Lee County, Florida.

Mission
The mission of the SMARTS Mentoring Program is to provide a quality and supportive environment for teachers in Title I schools

Duties of SMARTS Mentors

  • Welcome new and beginning teachers identified by administration as at risk and take a personal interest in their professional development
     
  • Share your knowledge, skills, and experience with other teachers.
     
  • Listen well, recognize excellence in others, and encourage excellence in others
     
  • Offers support, challenge, patience, new perspectives and standards
     
  • Work with SMARTS mentee a minimum of 2 hours per week not to exceed three hours
     
  • Maintains Confidentiality
     
  • Creates success through caring
     
  • Celebrates successes and discusses failures
     
  • Schedules a mutually agreeable time for your next meeting
     
  • Initiates closure to meetings by rephrasing your understanding of the mentee/ mentor relationship, expressing your feelings regarding outcomes of meetings

SMARTS Mentor Qualifications
  • Currently employed at the mentee's school location
     
  • Professionalism, reliability and willingness to assume the position duties
     
  • Masters Degree and/or National Board of Professional Teacher Standards Certified
     
  • Valid Florida Professional Teacher Certification
     
  • Outstanding performance pursuant to section 10.12.34 (3)(a.) 1-7
